Re: Solidworks to slice? OR do I need Simplify 3d
Does SW even include a slicer ? Its not a very common feature of cad tools. It doesn't seem like it'd be a priority for them, given they cater to people doing high end multi-axis milling and the like, not for people printing on low-end (relatively) printers. S3d is a great investment (and trivial co...

Re: What software are most people using?
I found the same with SketchUp - I spent more time trying to convince the thing to make proper surfaces than I did modelling. I would have to re-do parts over when they got messed up, and in many cases it was super painful to create the new surface. Any non-trivial use of boolean operators would cre...

Re: Question about supports.
The steps jsc mentions is the best way to start. You should be able to get supports printing okay with out more elaborate measures. Fixing all those issues will make the overall print experience better anyways. However, if for some reason you still have problems: You can also use a raft, assuming th...

Re: Loud Fans
I replaced both the 40mm fans with Noctua ones, and they are much quieter. However, I found that the power supply fan turned out to be the the noisiest, and isn't easily swapable (without dismantling the power supply I assume) I ended up building one of the IKEA cabinets to put it all in, and with t...

Re: Buying an M2
As a counter-opinion, I wouldn't worry about spares for now. Unless you plan on doing business critical printing with the printer, where downtime is costly, or live somewhere where shipping costs are quite prohibitive. I have has my M2 for a year, and haven't needed anything new. I did partially bre...

Re: Moving electronics out of enclosure
Insta: Have successfully printed for extended periods of time with the electronics at 120F ? I tried to determine a safe number a while ago and couldn't find much info. I though someone was experiencing problems at lower temps than that, but I could be mistaken.

Re: Just setup OctoPrint. Any tips?
The transferring of the file doesn't bother me too much, as I always save gcode to the same folder and s3d/octoprint remember the right folder and are sorted by date so its about 5 buttons clicks in total. The octoprint file list thing is more complex than I really want. I would rather it only ever ...

Re: Z AXIS Home Switch Upgrade
What kind of first-layer-height settings do you typically use ? I'm wondering if you are homing it super-close to the nozzle, and running razor thin first layers, and so extremely tiny differences in homing puts you between a proper first layer, and no first layer. Whereas I think most of us probabl...

Re: Z-axis skipping at start of print.
Perhaps check the lubrication of the z-axis leadscrew. It gets significantly more wear at the top last bit of the travel than anywhere else (unless every print you do is super-tall), so it might look nicely lubed upwhen you look at half-way up it - but the last little section perhaps not so much.

Re: About MakerGear Video
If you are having a video crew come in to shoot some footage anyways - I'd suggest looking at what the [hopefully minimal] incremental cost it would be to also get them to put together some longer videos about some of the other things suggested - tours of the factory/assembly areas, overview of how ...
