first layer tempature.

Post by JeremyV » Sun Jan 03, 2016 1:32 am

so I am kinda new to 3d printing and trying to learn as much as I can as fast as possibile.
So my question is why by defalt does s3d set the first layer cooler then the rest of the print?
Is there some magic tempatuer that it sticks better to the bed vs hotter? I am not haveing any issues with the first layer just want to understand what is going on. I am printing abs and taulman 618 nylon at the moment and things are going well.

I just wanted to thank all the amazing people on this forum! this is really a great group of people who really seem to have eachothers backs and are super willing to help eachother! Its a nice change compaired to most forums.

if you are printing 618 and saying all is going well then you really got things down.. 618 is no joke to try and print with. everything else should be easy by comparison. i never noticed s3d making the first layer cooler. the default used to be 10 deg hotter on the first layer just to get it to stick really well. my abs profile is 96deg for 1st layer and 90deg for all other layers. its been like that for 3 years without changing.

Yea the nylon is not super easy to print with vs abs.
It took me most of a day to get it figured out. The saving grace was figureing out to take printer paper and glue it down to the glass bed and print on top of that! After that it was no problem.

Maybe I messed up my default first layer setting and accadently saved it
I dont remember adjusting it but then again when I first got my XYZ printer it was broken and I changed every setting in the world to try and get it to print only to find out that one of the mounts was broken and was letting one of the belts move around. It prints ok now but not something I would ever reccomend anyone buying... The only good thing it did was get me into 3d printing however it sat for 6months cause I could not get it to print because I did not know it was broken when delivered. lol rant over.

yes the biggest thing with nylons is getting it to stay stuck to the platform.

Do you print much nylon or mostly abs and pla?
Most of the parts I am making need to be strong yet not brittle so the nylon seemse to work very well. The finish on the parts is not as nice as my abs but its close.
Keeping it bone dry is also a must.

How long have you been printing 3d?

I never print pla and very little abs anymore. I almost always print with petg and now epc also. I got my first m2 about 2.5-3 years ago now i think. I have 3 of them now. 2 for plastic and one just prints ninjaflex exclusively. Nylon is strong but a little too flexible, it warps really bad and sucks up moisture so i rarely use the stuff. Petg is where its at for me. A little more rigid then nylon, strong layer bonding and almost warp free.

How brittle is it? I need something that won't brake when
Under load and impact's. So far nylon seems to work but would be nice to print with something a bit less picky.

Not brittle at all. It has more flex and give than abs. Perg is what water bottles are made of so you know those can be crumbled up pretty good

Maybe I'll get some of that and give it a try. Abs is way to stiff and brittle then what I need for most parts. There are some parts it works great for though.
Do you print for fun of buisness?
