I tried cleaning the keyboard twice before giving up. There were three sheets of clear membrane with circuit traces on them that the keys would push down on. The liquid had got between these and the capillary effect carried it into the small control board. I don't know if it wicked into one of the connectors and shorted it out or what but there was no trace of liquid anywhere after I cleaned it.
I make my own tea and put very little sugar in it so it is nowhere near as bad as coke, but still managed to break the keyboard and mouse. The problem is I've made a custom desk where the keyboard sits on a slide-out platform that is below the desktop level, so anything that is spilled anywhere on the desk will run off the edge right onto the keyboard, making it very easy to kill the keyboard no matter where you spill. I think I may make a gutter or splash rail on the desk edge so this can't happen so easily. I'm actually amazed it took over 20 years for it to happen-- that's how long I've been using this desk.

Experience is what you get when you didn't get what you wanted.
