How do I prep Printer for Non Use

Post by nettjs » Mon Jan 26, 2015 9:10 pm

I am a Middle School STEM teacher,
I have received my Maker Gear M2. but...I'll be able to use it for a while then have to store it for summer and a move to a new building.
What is the best way to do this?
First post and thanks to all.

Zip-tie the belts together like they were when the printer arrived to prevent things from moving around when somebody less familiar with the machine tries to move it.
Zip-tie the bed down onto the spider so the glass & heater don't fall off if it gets moved.
Raise the bed to the very top, oil the smooth rods on Z, grease the leadscrew, then gently lower the bed all the way to the bottom. Oil the smooth rods again.
Tuck the wiring inside the frame of the machine and zip-tie it to the spider (or itself) as applicable.

That's really about it. Try and prevent surface corrosion of the rods and make sure the thing can't move too much. Undo all the zip-ties when it's time to bring it out of storage, re-oil the rods, grease the linear slides, and you're good to go!

Thanks, insta.I knew I took a bunch of pics while unpacking for a reason! Ha
Now I feel comfortable using it. Really excited and am very impressed with the forum and support.
Much appreciated.

Sorry Mathis, I'm afraid I'm not able to compose PM's yet. Please feel free to send me an email.

Hey Nettjs, I'm in a similar situation. I'm helping the STEM program in my school with running their 3D printer. Unfortunately I didn't get the glory of unpacking the M2 myself so I have no pictures or experience to go off of for "Summer-izing" my printer. Care to post relevant pictures here or elsewhere of the printer when it was shipped to you?
