Box within a box is a good idea for shipping. Into the gap, spray that crack sealer foam that's used on houses, that expands into a really stiff protective bubble. (You've seen it, it sets up really solid and doesn't crush.) ;)

I'm planning to bring it in the cabin as hand luggage, which should be the safest of all options available. Now watch me drop it as I'm walking off the plane...
