What about the World Maker Faire, September 20-21? Is MakerGear going to have a presence there?

All,

Well, before Rick and team headed off to Chi-town for IMTS, he was gracious enough to lend me a tub of printed objects to show the kids at a local FIRST FTC training/demo session.

Unfortunately I didn't get a picture with the 50+ kids and parents who attended my unscripted bit of presentation followed by massive Q&A (I've found this to be a very effective format, BTW). I did get a picture after the session (when everybody else went to lunch) with the setup that I had for the demo:

3DPrintingForFIRST.JPG (141.28 KiB) Viewed 14163 times
On the left is my USB monitor running a PowerPoint slide show of pictures of various objects printed on M2s. (jimc will immediately recognize the photo on screen at the time the picture was taken! Thanks to all who have given their permission for me to use the photos.) Next is the M2 that the FIRST team at Brush High School in Lyndhurst got through the program that Rick pointed me to. Next is my lit-up M2 printing, and on the right is my notebook running S3D, which is projected above the setup. You can also see the flame from the Senior Games torch and little Luxo (thanks to Rick for letting me borrow!).

We had a small drawing and gave a couple of the teams printed mounting brackets for their robot microcontroller modules. Hot off the press, so to speak... ;-)

What you don't see (besides the kids and parents) are the tables in the room, each with six or more printed objects for kids/parents to check out, everything from tallhexes and bigfoot heads to MAKE torture tests, skulls, art pieces, geometric pieces, etc., etc. I also passed around some filament and a hot end. Off to the far right (out of photo) was a white board with a drawing of "The 3D Printing Process" -- and we talked about taking an idea (your own, or more often an improvement on something you've seen), designing in CAD, slicing, and printing.

Everybody got pretty involved in the discussions --- and some parents stayed after asking very detailed questions about costs -- for the printer, for consumables, for software, etc., etc. So I expect Rick may be getting an order or two based on what people saw.

And I got all his toys back to him in time for their run to Chicago.

Thanks Rick!
Dale

Hey, jimc! Knew you'd like the photo. I have several of yours, and specifically mentioned your skills at finishes --- there's the pic of the final finished deck lamp in that slide show.

When I changed groups at work about 6 years ago, I moved to an organization where we present and demo tech stuff to customers a couple times a year. Of course, at my age (and weight), standing around at our annual trade show being "up" and "enthusiastic" for 8 hours for 2 days can be a real footbuster. I learned after my first (utterly miserable) show, by watching my boss, that you say the heck with everything and have fun with it and share your love of the stuff and the rest will work itself out. So I have three or four training / lab sessions at one conference every year, and two training sessions and two days of trade show floor duty at another conference every year. I go to see my friends, to show what we've been working on, to find out what people need, etc., etc., and I specifically DO NOT log on to company e-mail if I don't have to.

So you just have to decide up front to make it fun. You have to share your enthusiasm and love for the stuff. You look every audience member in the eye, even if you are usually the kind of gregarious, extroverted, outgoing engineer who looks at OTHER people's shoes when you talk to them. You listen carefully to questions, repeat them so everybody can hear, and provide answers with examples that they can relate to.

They are there because they want to know what it is, and WHETHER IT IS FUN -- so make it fun!

And you have to wear excellent anti-perspirant, clothes that don't show your sweat. And you have to go back to the room / home afterwords and take a nap, then have a nice dinner with spouse / a good friend and decompress. But it's totally worth it.

Go in with the attitude of "I'm going to have as much fun as possible and share that fun!" and you'll do fine. After all, you KNOW the stuff --- and they don't. Let them ask questions, don't be afraid to say I don't know, or I'll get back after I talk to the person that knows. Answer the question, even if they didn't read the manual that answers it six times -- because nobody else in the room read the manual either. (Why DO I help write those, anyway?)

jimc, the stuff you print is MILES ahead of my design skills. Frankly, I wish I could hear you present on stuff you've printed, how it solves this or that problem, the tricks you use to get the finishes you get. I'd learn A LOT. (And it would be fun!)

You know, perhaps we should be there with Rick and the MG guys... they can cover the details on the machine -- but we can cover the how to have fun part!

Nice what a great way to share 3D printing. Seeing it in printing is the best way to understand 3D printing.

Just saw that there are responses to this post. Sorry for the delay.

IMTS was great. We were invited to participate and it was an invitation that we really could not turn down! I'll post a pic in a bit. Since IMTS is a week long, Josh and I covered the first half then Adam and Ryan had the second half.

We will not be at MF NY.

Rick
