First Layer Wrinkles / Ripples

Post by kartcrg » Wed Dec 02, 2015 8:54 pm

Any recommendations on settings to change to get rid of them? It's usually perfectly smooth by the 3rd layer. Using PLA. Thanks!

Looks like your print bed isn't level and your printhead is too close to the printbed on a couple of the squares. Relevel and reset Z height as per Jules amazing guide.

First layer wrinkles like that are almost certainly due to an unlevel bed. The wrinkling occurs where the nozzle is too close to the bed. Your print covers a lot of area, which will make it challenging, but you can probably get it reasonably close to level.

Check your bed level and your gap. (You see the ripples on the front ones, but not the rear prints? Indicates a bed level problem.)

Those ripples happen when the bed is too close to the nozzle for the first layer. So after you make sure it's been leveled, check the gap by re-setting the Z-stop and then doing the Z-Offset calibration. :D

Update: Awwww....you guys already had it covered. (Got to learn to type faster!) Anyway, I concur with them. :D

Thank you very much guys! The bed is actually very level sans some bowing in the glass. The first layer width and calibration squares are very similar on all areas of the bed. I know my Z gap (first layer height) is too close. I have it like that so I can print directly on to bare glass with no adhesion issues, didn't even think about it causing the wrinkles. I'm sure thats it, I'll back it off a bit. Jules, your guid has been very helpful on a few occasions. Thanks again! 8-)

Thats part of the reason to go Aluminum build plate. No more bowing.

If mine had that much of a bow in it i'd definitely consider the aluminum. (Really do hate having to mess with the adhesive though.)
