I started printing a larger print and on the bottom layer I got this very odd bubbling in two different spots on the print. I am using Ultimachine PLA at 220C (new hot end). Any ideas what might be causing this? Has anyone encountered this before?

That's pretty strange. Is the filament steaming when it extrudes? Maybe it absorbed moisture.

That looks like a a patch where the filament hasn't adhered to the platform: it curls slightly, rather than laying flat, so adjacent threads join together and look like bubbles. The patch is small enough that the threads can bridge the gap; if it were any larger, they'd peel off and wreck the print.

Perhaps a finger smudge?

before i read ed's response thats exactly what i was thinking....something was on the glass and it didnt stick in that area

Thanks for all of your responses. The consensus seems to be that its just a matter of the filament not sticking in that spot. I was worried it might be something in the settings or mechanical. I'll put on a fresh coat of hairspray and try again.

I have had the same issue on a large, flat print. I have only had the M2 for 4 weeks so I am new at this. It looked exactly the same. I was able to get past it but I suppose it was non-sticking areas.

I got something that looked almost exactly like that once before I started using hairspray. I got a thumbprint in the middle of the glass, and the PLA just wouldn't stick to it there. But I had a similar problem on my most recent print, seemed to have something to do with the fact that it was a new roll of filament. I should have checked the first bit of filament for imperfections, although the root cause could be any one of several possibilities I can think of. It worked itself out after half a minute, and was smooth as can be for the rest of the print. But it's surprising how a surface imperfection like that can keep impacting the layers above it. The plastic is warped, and it will stay warped, layer after layer.
