Need Parts

Post by KeithA » Fri Mar 27, 2015 12:26 am

Well, I have been having problems with intermittent extrusion and thought my extruder needed to be cleaned. I took it apart and all seemed to go fine. I put it back together and it started printing normally. Just went I thought my problems were gone I noticed a couple of things (1) The fan on the extruder was going on and off during the print (2) Some filament was oozing out above the heater block. This is where things went south. I took it apart and noticed the wire to the fan wasn't properly connected anymore and had come out of the connector. I also noticed that the ABS filament drive had a crack near where the black part of the hot end fits snugly into it. The final problem being when I went to disassemble the hotend again the brass threads broke off instead of backing out of the nozzle. So basically I am dead in the water. Now for the questions;

1. Is there a simple way to reconnect the wire on the fan into the connector? I couldn't tell by just looking at it.
2. I will be buying the V4 assuming they are in shipping. Does it come with the black filament drive or will I need to order that as well?

Thanks

the v4 is totally different setup and should come with everything. as for the connector, im not even sure if you will use that fan but if you do you will need a new on with new pins or sockets to crimp on the end of the wire.

The V4 does not come with the extruder motor mount. It does have everything else to swap the hot end over as well as good instructions. When you do get back up and running you can grab the source files HERE and print some spares.

This is everything that comes in the V4 upgrade. I did a quick right up on installing it which can be seen HERE.

I had a wire break off a fan too but it was on the fan end not at the connector so I was able to just solder it back on. It's not a bad idea to have a few spare fans on hand though, I've gone through at least three of them but mine tend to like to try to eat hex wrenches.

Like Steve, I am a certified expert with a 2.5 mm (M3) hex fan blade remover. :-(

You will like the V4. The hot zone in the hot end is shorter (not all the way up the tube), so it seems to drool less and put down exactly what you tell it to. I'm running the stock MakerGear Bigfoot head demo G-code file, unmodified, with MG black PLA at 218 C, bed at 60 C, and the quality is just super. The slicing used for it uses 3 perimeters, from the inside out. I have a bunch of LEDs on my M2, some on the fan bracket above the hot end, and some on the frame. When it is printing the perimeters, you can see clearly which is being printed, and when all three are done, the surface of the 3 perimeters is flat and shiny. Just awesome.

Another nice thing about the V4 hot end is how it's mounted. There's a screw you can loosen and slide the hot end up or down just a bit. Once you have the bed level and true, if the Z height at home is off just a bit (say, less than half a millimeter), you can get out your 0.005" feeler gauge, slip it under the nozzle, adjust the final height perfectly by sliding the hot end in the mounting bracket, and clamp it down with the M3 screw. (In the photo, you can't see the clamp screw because it's behind the hot end wires.) NOTE: When you install your V4, follow the directions on wire routing. Don't follow my picture --- I've done a bunch of other goofy stuff with the fans, etc., and I've just got stuff routed wherever for now -- need to dress things to final yet!)

Just don't stick the hex driver in the fan. Now that I've jinxed you, good thing you got a spare fan!
