Hmmm actually I can't recall why off the top of my head, but I replaced the extruder motor/gearbox for some reason late last year. Stripped the original hex screw trying to get it out so just got a new one as well, so that should be A-OK. Maybe it's been problem free because I have a bad memory!

For you and jules, in the gcode tab do you have the relative extrusion distances bix checked? Make sure it is.

Nope! I don't think mine has ever been checked.....I'll have to run a print tomorrow (got a very full plate today) to give it a try and see how it works! Thanks Jim! Yes see if that makes your multiplier start working. Its not on by default in s3d and i saw a big difference in retraction and it cured a few ither small issues i had.

Did that setting somehow get changed from the older machines default? (We never had the thin surface thread problem with the older machines, and honestly, i never checked that setting in S3D, just let it default.)

(The Rev. E is currently undergoing mods.....attaching some Nema 17 dampers, and only half done due to lack of proper length screws, but I'll pick some up after dentist run this afternoon.)

Checked the gear - drive is tight, gear shows no visible wear, teeth aren't gooped up. "Bite" looks good.
Checked the box and re-ran the test cubes. Nothing seems to affect the outcome still, no change with multiplier between .90 and 1.06, filament diameter set between 1.75 and 1.50 or any combination thereof. This weekend I'll try reverting back to an older version of S3D I guess, and order some new filament if that doesn't do it.

Uninstalled S3D 3.1.0 and went back to 2.2.2, ran a half dozen of the test pieces with varying multiplier and filament settings. They all are identical to each other, and all the prior pieces I've posted photos of. I'm ordering some new PLA, but honestly I can't see how this would actually be a filament issue.
I'm not a coding/EE/programming type - could this be a firmware thing or something? Are there updates that need to be done that I've not been paying attention to?

How fast are you printing it? (I print PLA at from 3600-4200 mm/min.) Maybe it's just rocketing along too fast and getting globby where it slows down?

I was using the 4800 mm/min that was set by default. Dropped to 3600...no difference.
For the hell of it I printed one at 2000; and it was in fact better. But, yeah, agonizingly slow! On the left, with just a slight amount of gaps as you can see, multiplier 1.00 and on the right I jumped to 1.06. Maybe it is filament...?
