Ragged extrusion- any ideas?

I'm using an E3D v6 on a Makergear M2. Things that didn't help:

Increasing/ decreasing extruder temps
Increasing/ decreasing extrusion width
Replacing the extruder stepper motor
Increasing/ decreasing filament tension
Cleaning the nozzle, and inspecting every other part of the E3D
Checking the pinion gear
Printing at 1/3 speed
Decreasing digipot value to 180 from 225, in case the higher setting was making the stepper too hot
Replacing the filament with fresh spools from 2 different brands

... any ideas?

Hard to see what is going on in that photo. Your walls look good. Is that supposed to be infill? What does the model look like?

Probably too much moisture in the filament. I would put it in the oven at 170F for 12 hours and try again.

it does look like you are severely overextruding. its pushing out so much material its squishing and bulging out all on the outside perimeters.

What is your nozzle size, extrusion width, extrusion multiplier - and did you run the single-wall calibration test?

Thanks all for the replies.

It's a basic calibration shape, with crosshatching infill. I thought the filament was bad, but even fresh, vacuum packed spools from reliable suppliers didn't fix the issue. 0.4 mm nozzle, tried extrusion widths multipliers between 0.8-1.2. I didn't try any calibration tests.

HOWEVER: Thanks to advice from another source, I tried pushing the filament through by hand. Even at high temps like 150 C I couldn't push it through, so I went nuts up to 200 C and still nothing happened- not even the boiling of PLA which I have seen before at high temps like that. My best guess it to wait on a new thermistor, and see if that fixes the issue.

did you get those #'s off. 150c is cold. even 200c can be low for pla.

Your extrusion width should either be 0.48 or 0.50.

You can't just make up extrusion multipliers - you have to calculate it by printing a wall one layer thick and then measuring the thickness compared to your extrusion width. Measure your filament diameter and enter that before the test.

Then your temp - should be in the 200-230 range.

Sorry, I meant 180- 300c range.

For the extrusion multiplier, .88 worked well for me for months, then I started having issues this week.

Run off a thin-wall calibration test (viewtopic.php?f=3&t=1964) and zip up your FFF profile and attach it here. More data is needed for better suggestions.

(I only saw the first picture earlier on my phone, the other photos are much clearer.)
