Smoothing a round, cone shaped object.. best way?

Post by hybridprinter » Sun Jul 12, 2015 1:19 pm

What would be the best way to smooth a round cone shaped object, smoothing on the angled cone face? Material either ABS or PETG. The object needs to stay in perfect round so sanding would have to be even all the way around (maybe use a wood lathe?). or is there a quicker easier way to do it with vapor, XTC-3D, etc.

object is small, about 2" at base and the cone tapers down to a point on the other end, overall length is about 1 - 2 inches.

If you have a lathe, then certainly putting in a feature to be able to center it properly and turning it would work.

ABS can be vapor smoothed, but it will round off the point.

You can also try using high fill primer, then sanding back until you just hit the plastic.

Have you seen some of the work with the XTC3D? (Does that work on PETG and ABS?) Jin's got some gorgeous finishing work on display. I'd go with that option on a difficult surface. It levels very nicely.

thinking about this setup.. probably the cheapest thing to do this (unless others have ideas)..

wannabe lathe.. http://www.grizzly.com/products/Hobby-L ... nder/H2669

3dprinted chuck.. http://www.thingiverse.com/thing:5791

just need to figure out if that chuck can fit into that lathe swing over bed and still be tightened/loosened while mounted in drill.

the largest O.D. of the parts to sand goes up to about 5 inches.
