Replicated my house key

Post by Farr0wn3d » Sun Aug 23, 2015 12:56 am

I thought it would be a neat project to try to duplicate my house key from photos with the canvas insertion tool in fusion360, so I whipped up a drawing and set up the .25 nozzle and went for it. I had done an attempt with 123D in the past but that was done without any knowledge of how keys worked and that one required some post processing to make it work. This time I wanted to do it faster and more accurate so that I could just take it off the bed and use it in the lock. It turned out great! first one was done in PLA and was "fairly" sturdy, this new one was done in PETG and is pretty flimsy, if I were to do it again I would opt for a more hearty filament.

I wouldn't call PETg "flimsy". I assume the problem you have is that it is flexible, and at the scale of a house key, you can probably bend the thing. The PETg is too flexible and the PLA is too brittle; like Jules, I'd be worried about it breaking off in the lock. Sounds like a perfect job for the eSUN polycarbonate (I have a sample. . . that should be enough to duplicate a few keys!). . .

Thanks for the high resolution shots of your house key. Now if we only knew where you lived....

ROFL! We are fairly questionable characters! Jin has a very good point!
Better redact your pics and spare your spools! 8-)

Don't even need the bittings: that code on the side gives it away. Check out http://www.thingiverse.com/thing:52761 and enter that code.

For a fun time, some high res shots of the whole TSA luggage master key set have been circulating these last few days; duplicate those and you can open any luggage made in the last decade.
