how do I print this

Post by imsmooth » Sun Aug 03, 2014 10:02 pm

I have a file that I'm going to try and print. It is a box. No problem there. What I want to do is have cutouts on the side for input devices to go through. As you can see there is no support for the first layer on the top of the cutout. I fear the hot material will just sink instead of taking the form of a straight edge. What does one do in these situations?

What is a VC3 file?

You can just print it as is. Perfectly horizontal segments supported on both ends will be bridged: the print will just extrude in mid air, but the ends will hold it up. You will probably want to adjust your bridging parameters to reduce sagging. A slight amount of under extrusion will stretch the filament and help it stay taut, and varying the bridging speed also has effects, but they are contentious. Some people say slower is better, others say faster is better. I think slower is better, down to 20 mm/s.
