Digital Level for leveling? good or bad idea?

Post by metrons » Mon Nov 17, 2014 12:30 am

I was looking on amazon and i saw digital levels. to me this seems like a good idea.

what do you guys think about something like this?

i've seen stuff like this (which looks great too) seems like a bit of work though. i'm not sure which would be more accurate?

i know i'm tired of leveling the bed by eyeballing and using little cards underneath. has to be a much faster way to do this and be very accurate about it. love some feedback on this.

you not leveling the bed to the earth so a level wont do anything for you. you are calibrating the bed so the gap is the same between it and the nozzle at any given point. what you need is a set of feeler guages. usually .005-.006" is good

ah, something like this?

http://www.amazon.com/25025-26-Blade-Ma ... eler+gauge

and i'd just stick on like....005 gauge and get the tip of the extruder to touch that along the bed? this correct?

damn jim, you know everything!

yeah thats it. you dont have to order it though. you can get one almost anywhere. check your local napa or auto parts store. they are a few bucks. yes use the 005" one and with everything heated, that should just slide between the nozzle and bed with just a slight drag. the bed is on springs so be sure your not wedging the gauge between and is squishing down. just a light drag without moving anything. now you can level the bed with whatever size feeler gauge you want. the idea is to make the gap the same. once its level then move the extruder to the middle of the platform, hit home z in s3d and set your gap to .005" with the z-stop bolt. adjust then hit home z, adjust then home z. keep doing it until its right.
