Burnt PETG

Any ideas on what would cause this burnt mound of PETG to occur on the last few layers of the print?

yeah that happens occasionally. it just collects on the nozzle usually in the beginning of the print. the first 2 layers or so are big for collecting on the nozzle. it just sits the on the nozzle until way into your print when its been cooking and turning brown then it just falls off and ends up in your print. is so important that the first layer is not squished to the bed with pet. goto home depot in the tool asile. goto the welding section. they have small wood handle wire brushes. get the one with stainless bristles. before each print when the nozzle is hot give it a little brushing to clean it off. i do this before every print no matter what plastic im using.
