LCD case/position change

Post by Josh » Thu Aug 06, 2015 8:45 pm

Good afternoon folks. We are working on the case design for a different LCD controller (see photo).

The case design that we've been using has the LCD as a standalone item on the side of the printer (pictured in "current.jpg"). Another option is to mount it to the front of the electronics case/frame (pictured in "potential.jpg" and "potential_2.jpg"), bolted to the frame with the front two M4 bolts that secure the electronics case. Before switching, we thought we'd get your input. Comments/questions/recommendations/alternatives?

Thank you!

Just one question.....The new placements don't get in the way of the SD card slot? (They all look fine.)

Send me one, I'll help you guys work out all the stupid ways somebody can break it. I give it 3 prints before an S3D purge cycle melts a hole through the screen.

I do love how it works with the SD card and the metal enclosure, especially on the last picture. That's hotness.

edit:

The side mount is going to get in the way of my table of shoulder-to-shoulder M2s

The side mount looks like it would also get in the way of my right-side spool holder for the dual extruder setup.

The side mount ("current.jpg") is likely going away one way or another; either way, it's never been actually secured, it's just that that is as far as the wires run.

The front mount option could be made to not interfere with the SD card, but it has a full size SD reader on it anyway (and the adapter blocks easy access to the relevant pins on RAMBo; the slot is just visible in "potential.jpg" and "current.jpg" on the right side of the case).

here is how I moved mine to the side, also moved the case back and put the fan on the side also. (so its not sucking hot air from under the bed)
note: i am using a smoothieboard. but shouldn't make a difference for the general concept. it does mean chaining the orientation of the printer.

Here is my work area. I use the spot right in front of my printer for working on printed parts or the 3d mouse sits there while designing. I have found several locations that would work, but would prefer to mount it to the machine above the x-axis or under my monitor stand. It would be nice to have a cord instead of a ribbon cable.

I don't have any extra desk space and I like the printer to be self-contained. I remixed my favorite Makergear tool holder with a little shelf on the front angled at 45deg. This puts the controller in a very convenient spot, it's stuck on with velcro so you can remove it and use it as a wired remote when doing maintenance, etc. I also slightly angled the Allen key slots so they wouldn't drag on the spool and "click" as in the original design.

There's enough room on the LCD shelf to emboss a nice "MakerGear" Logo. Then you could maybe lose the noisy MakerGear fan guards (replace with wire ones) still have a nice prominent logo in the front, and if the customer slaps your LCD over it, the LCD says "MakerGear_M2" on it anyway (at least mine does) ;)

I still like the attached one that comes out the front. It's low profile. With limited bench space and in the future multi extruders and reels an unattached one will be in the way of something most of the time. Unless it can be wall mounted. Just my personal opinion.
