Self destruct initiated...

So, I haven't fired up the printer for a little bit and decided to print a raspberry pi case tonight. Got everything heated up and put a fresh spool of 1.75 PLA (makergear) on. I started printing and watched the first few layers as I always do, everything was looking good. 45 minutes or so later, I log on to check on my print and to my horror I see this

It's not obvious from the picture but that PLA came out at lava temps. I ran downstairs to pull the plug but as you can see by the dangling hot end, it was already too late... Here's the temp graph showing historical temps:

Does anyone have any idea how this could of happened? There was some entries in the log that the printer hit max temp and shut itself down, I am glad it... The color of the aluminum block on the hot end is permanently changed as it got way too hot. The whole house reeks. I have the dell brick version of the M2 if that makes any difference. The printer has been relatively problem free so far.

Uh, I'd go straight to support@makergear.com with that, they like to know about those things directly...

The extruder thermistor cable is broken, somewhere in the loom where it flexes every time time the X axis moves.

The fault will be intermittent, of course, but if you measure the resistance at the controller end (disconnected from the board) while poking at the wiring, you'll see the resistance jumping.

Seconding this, my hotend once exploded in a similar manner.

Upgrade to the v4. No PEEK on the v4.

Heh, that's a unique approach :)

(although, Rick is right, upgrade to the v4, its' better)

Yeah, that was pretty sneaky.....I was planning to wait until you guys figured out all the ups and downs of the V4's, but I got sucked into the link and well, now I've got one coming too. (Just starting to get comfortable with PLA, still haven't tried ABS, and i'm already planning ahead for wood, nylon, PET and cookie dough.)

It's just addictive.

The only downsides of the V4:

* You can't use your pile of spare V3bs (ahem)
* It's not free
* You gain so much Z-height that sometimes binder clips catch on the rail nuts

Upsides:

* Literally everything else
