How much filament is on the roll?

Post by dfr2923 » Tue Jul 14, 2015 2:17 am

Just wondering what you all use to decide if you have enough filament on the roll to get that last print done? I have one more print to do but not sure if I have enough. Do I weight it than subtract what reel weighs? If so what does an Esun black PetG filament reel weigh. Sorry if this is on here somewhere but I couldn't find it.

We generally just wing it. The last 20 feet of a spool somehow account for 80% of that spool's production. Have a new roll handy to chase in if you dun goofed.

A clear eSun spool weighs exactly 250g.

There's a thread here somewhere with instructions on how to do a mid-print spool switch that I thought was helpful. You could make use of this opportunity to practice.

I've been thinking on and off about/shopping for filament splicers for a while now, for this sort of thing, but everything I've come across is too expensive, requires post-weld finishing, or has bad reviews.

the few times i ran short i just got another spool ready, clipped the end of the filament so it was flat. did the same with the end of the one in the printer and when it started to disappear into the filament drive i just inserted the new piece keeping pressure on it so the ends stayed touching. never stopped the print.
