Stops Extruding around the same point on a piece

Post by mehmeh » Thu Sep 17, 2015 8:24 pm

So I made a device case (hollow box top and bottom halves) that I'm trying to print, but for some reason the extruder just stops extruding when I get to the surface of the inside. It tries to do the 100% fill on the top surface, and then about a third of the way through the layer it just stops extruding. I've done this 3 times now with the same results. Each time this happens, I have to reverse out the filament and then feed it back through to get it to extrude again.

I printed a very similar part the other day and this did not happen.

What filament/temperature/speed are you using? That can happen with, for example, PETG when trying to extrude too fast with too high an extrusion multiplier on infill. You may be stripping out.

I'm using PLA 1.75 mm at 220 as per the instructions. Doing 60 mm/s

Those are okay speeds for PLA, although the temp is a little high. Check the filament diameter to make sure that it is still the same as it was when you calibrated the first time (there might be a thick spot in the filament).

After that, check your Filament Drive screw tension:
viewtopic.php?f=3&t=2694

If that doesn't fix the problem, you might have a partial clog.

Adjusted the tension and tried to make sure there wasn't a clog by trying to clean the hot end with an allen wrench like some of the other posts have suggested. Still messed up on the top surface. Filament diameter is sitting at about 1.8 mm.

It's weird because the part prints fine with a 50% infill just fine, but as soon as it gets to that top surface, it just stops extruding half way through.

Are you using S3D? Package up your project as a factory file and we can try to see if there is anything obvious.

I use Slic3r along with printrun.

Here is my slicer config

Okay, one thing that catches the eye: you have specified a 3mm filament width. You are probably not using 3mm filament.
Also, your extrusion and height settings are aggressive for a .35mm nozzle. Try setting nozzle diameter to .4, layer height to .2, and see if that works. You can then try upping them again if it does.

You'll also want to carry out some extrusion calibration, check out Jules' recent step by step guide for beginners for details.

Sorry, there are different configs in that file that I forgot about, which you're referencing. I've been using a 0.2mm layer height and 1.75mm as my filament diameter.

The ones I'm using are these:

So it appears that it just didn't like the 180 mm/s bridge speed. It was treating the first solid top layer as a bridge layer and blowing through it really fast, which caused the jam. I took the bridge speed down to 80mm/s and was able to get it to print fine.
