Touch Screen Solution for M2

Post by Slipshine » Tue Oct 27, 2015 7:58 pm

I have been playing with adding a touchscreen to the Octoprint.

I have tried some of the raspberry Pi screens and was not real satisfied with the solution. Then I found a compatible android app that works quite well as a front end for the PI (note must be Android 4.4 or above). I went on Ebay and found a place selling older 4.5" cell phone for $20.00 built a mount for it and TA DA functional wireless touch screen control for the m2. You can use it to change filament monitor prints pretty much whatever you want. All that was required was to configure it to my network and tie it to my raspberry Pi. You could use a cheep tablet if you want a larger screen but I didn't want to give up the space.

Some of the real advantages was to quality and speed of the touch screen.
Built in keyboard.
Can take it anywhere your wireless goes and monitor your progress.
CHEEP. If you have the Octoprint running it cost me $20 to my door. (Note you can still connect with a web browser to the PI while using it)

I assume this would be easy to port or use a tablet with as well. ? S3d on a tablet right at the machine full time would be awesome !!! Nice work !!!

I tried that with a 10" surface tablet and wasn't real happy with it. It worked ok but you were still printing out of windows which can get glitchy.
S3D really works better with a mouse and keyboard. Also it was in the way.
That's when I went to the octoprint and it is great. It was everything the guys on the forum said it would be,.
Adding a screen just seemed like the next logical step.

Where did you get the "compatible android app" and does it have a name?
