Couple Questions v4 hotend and z rod slop?

Post by jprochnow » Wed Oct 28, 2015 4:05 pm

First question. Is the v4 hotend a good upgrade vs the v3b? I don't presently print higher temp materials but I do like the aluminum plate that it uses for locating the nozzle.

Second question. At the top of the z threaded rod there is a bearing that locates the end of the rod. I noticed that there is some slop if I push/pull on the z knob. It appears that the fit between the rod and bearing is good but the fit between the bearing and the mounting block is loose. Has anyone seen this before?

It doesn't really matter, because the linear rails guide the platform and it might need a bit of compliance near the top end of travel, but if you're fussy:

I upgraded to the V4 hot end as part of rebuilding the M2 with a 24 V supply and haven't looked back. That said, unless you have a reason to change, I wouldn't bother: don't mess with success.

Thanks for the info. My printer had been printing great since day one so I guess I'll hold off on the V4 upgrade for the time being.

Another thing I finally noticed last night with my printer is when the glass bed is unclipped from the heated bed there is a gap between the two. It appears that the rubber corners are holding the glass up. Has anyone seen this before and is there enough slop in the corner mounts to move for the glass to seat all the way down? Or does someone recommend a printed upgrade to fix this?

The biggest advantage with the V4 is the ability to easily clean & replace the nozzle. The higher temperature range, faster speeds, cooler operation, reduced ooze, extra Z height, lower ringing, and faster warmup are all secondary ;)

That said, I still rock a V3b on one of my machines. It's my beater M2 for ABS.
