Never overlook the fact M2s are made here in the USA. Don't know if there's better,
but the user reviews on Amazon say not.
Other printers I've seen are mostly all China made specials.
Slick demos at a trade show might not be that easily recreated at home with the lessor experienced, like me.

Re: world maker faire NY who is goin...
sprior, was the build plate stuff you got called "BuildTak"? Did you try it out? How is it?
Re: world maker faire NY who is goin...
Yes I think that's what it was called. Haven't tried it yet, hopefully this weekend.
Re: world maker faire NY who is goin...
That's me. Still actively thinking about it, and believe it's worth pursuit, but other issues have delayed action. I believe that the combination of: * proper positioning, * lamp wattage, * type of Halogen IR lamp (spot or flood), * reflectors, and maybe mod of M2 can be beneficial.jsc wrote:Ah, I found the thread I was thinking about: https://groups.google.com/d/msg/makerge ... Is that you, Gary? Have you done any more experiments with your lamps?
I think localized heating of the model will have broader acceptance than climate-controlled enclosure.
I also believe that more focus is needed on controlling the forces that cause our problems than on resisting the forces. I just don't believe that attempts to resist the forces will help us with large models,

Re: world maker faire NY who is goin...
I agree, but maybe chemical engineering may be the answer. Other than heat resistance (and price), PET+ seems like a PLA-printing improved-ABS substitute, and I keep reading about other such filaments more and more.
Re: world maker faire NY who is goin...
Yes for sure. Its low warp like pla but strength greater than abs and heat resistance similar or just slightly under abs. The only thing i found is the opaque pet+ doesnt layer bond as well as the translucents. Its not bad but its not great either. I havent weighed it but i think they include the spool in the filament weight. The spool is this super quality item as well so its beefy. It just seems like there is very little filament on a spool which is already sold as 1/2 the standard size at 1lb. If they were 1kg spools it would be no big deal. Madesolid has a new one coming out that i need to sample. Supposed to be a polycarb substitute so probably a petg like colorfabb xt

On a related note, a cheap thermal camera got announced today: http://www.thermal.com/what_is_thermal_desktop.html
I had a bunch of non-3D printing related ideas for this thing, but it would also be very interesting for seeing how even the heating is on the bed, plus looking at how a model is cooling (which is why it is related to what's been talked about on this thread lately).
My finger is twitching over the "Add to cart" button...

Re: world maker faire NY who is goin...
My immediate problem with this cheap thermal camera is that they tell you things you don't need to know (like one line saying "206 x 156 Array" and the next line saying "32,136 Thermal Pixels". . . yay, they know how to multiply!), perhaps to obscure the fact that they aren't telling you the most important thing you do need to know (what the thermal resolution is, not to mention accuracy). Nor do they tell you what the focal range is (which is useful for people like me who occasionally do thermal imaging of chips or small circuit boards). I've seen plenty of cheap thermal imagers. The cost is always (as far as I've noticed) directly related to the resolution. Using the smart phone as the display saves a bit of money vs. a "real" thermal imager, but not much.sprior wrote:On a related note, a cheap thermal camera got announced today
On the other hand, just to image a 3D printer's bed and nozzle, it's probably about right. $200---I'll have to think about it. It's not bad.
Re: world maker faire NY who is goin...
Do you have digital camera that's 2-3 generations old? Take it apart & gently remove the IR shield from the sensor.
