E3D V6
Re: E3D V6
yup, even if the wires are set up perfect and makes nice even sweeps it can still only take so much back and forth motion. my bed thermistor wires were getting glitchy so i replaced those. after a year and a half of wiggling back and forth 16-20hrs a day they just had enough.

Guys,
is upgrading to this hotend worth the cost and effort? what are the advantages/disadvantages? thanks!

Re: E3D V6
assuming you have a v3b then i would say yes. not that there is anything wrong with the v3b. i got fantastic prints with mine for about a year BUT i was always right up to the top edge of the temp range with it at 255 with almost everything. i didnt like maxing it out like that. the other thing is the e3d is more responsive when it comes to ooze controls because the hot zone is so short. the coast/retract settings are just about cut in half when going from a v3b to e3d. lastly with the e3d i dont get the slow buildup in the filament path/brass tube making the hot end tight where it needs cleaning. the v3b will get like this over time if you change plastic types alot. there are no real disadvantages in upgrading. is it worth $80 for the upgrade...thats up to you. hot ends to me are somewhat a consumable. i was in no killer rush to get rid of mine but when it was time to replace some parts on my v3b i just made the switch to the e3d then. there is a quick change you need to make in the firmware for the thermistor type and you need to print a filament drive to hold the hot end ant thats about it. i have a whole setup i made for it. it can be found here.

E3D V6 Temperature Settings: (M2 with complete 24 volt modification)
After an hour of reading this thread I conclude:
* Configuration_h Change original M2 #DEFINE TEMP_SENSOR_0 1 to #DEFINE TEMP_SENSOR_0 5 Correct?
* Run PID ... What is recommended PID Max? I read some scary stuff that may explain my failed thermister.
Installation instructions say to run hot end up to 285C, then tighten nozzle. They go on to say "... exceeding 295C will permanently damage the thermister". (note that they say WILL damage, not MAY damage.

Re: E3D V6
gary, thats right on the temp sensor. as for max pid i do know i had to lower mine but im not on 24v. im 19v with a 12v heater so it was ramping up really quick. you will know if you need to reduce the max pid because when you run the auotune sequence it will overshoot too far and the autotune wont work. i think if you over shoot by 20 to 30 deg then it errors out. if it does cut your max pid by 25% and try again. the thermistor is rated to 300 deg by the manufacturer. you should not be ramping up over that. start running your pid autotune at 225 and see what happens.
Re: E3D V6
I am looking into the E3d but am somewhat confused as to the firmware version we would modify. I would have sinned we mod the version linked from the wiki but that appears to be from 2012. Can that be right? I know the latest firmware causes skipping so that's out.
What's the skinny?

Re: E3D V6
the firmware on the wiki is the correct firmware and is what would be on your machine right now. just pick the right one that applies. i think there are 4 different ones for different versions of the m2. the firmware change is easy. all you need to do is in the config h file is change the thermistor table to #5 so the temp reads correctly.
